Pharyngitis in children - a very common condition

Pharyngitis in children is one of the main reasons why parents go with a child to a pediatrician. This term is very general, after examining the child you can find various diseases: tonsillitis, nasopharyngitis, angina.

Pharyngitis in children can have:

  • viral origin - most often caused by the influenza or cold virus or, for example, the virus responsible for infectious mononucleosis,
  • bacterial origin - most often caused by group A streptococci leading to strep throat.

Much more often, symptoms of pharyngitis in children are caused by viruses than by bacteria. It is estimated that in 80% of cases it is the virus that is responsible for the disease. In this case, the course is much milder and recovery is possible without much interference from the outside.

Although an experienced doctor can assess what caused the disease, it is only pharyngeal swab can clearly answer the question of whether viruses or bacteria are responsible for pharyngitis.

How does infection occur?

Pharyngitis in children is transmitted by droplet. The disease is especially often found in children staying in large clusters on a daily basis - in nurseries, kindergartens. Most often, a microbe spreads when a sick person sneezes or coughs. Unfortunately, the disease can be spread even by a person who has no symptoms but is a carrier of bacteria in the nasal mucosa.

Treatment of pharyngitis in children

If the problem is virus attack, pharyngitis symptoms disappear on their own. Usually need 3-5 days for the child to feel clearly better.

During the disease, symptomatic treatment is used, in more difficult cases it is given anti-inflammatory and antipyretic drugs.

What can you do to ease your child?

It is worth taking care of hydration of the throat mucosa, frequent drinking to prevent dehydration. There are many topical products on the market for sore throats - it's worth using them. Give the child well during illness light meals at room temperature so as not to irritate the throat. They should be prepared in such a way that they are easy to swallow. During the heating season, take good care of optimal air humidification. Dry air additionally dries the mucosa and worsens the child's condition.

Pharyngitis in children caused by bacteria is often treated with antibiotics. The doctor decides about the necessity to give this type of medicine after careful examination of the small patient.
